Emily Tonkin, DO

Psychiatrist | Psychotherapist

About Dr. Tonkin

I am a psychiatrist who works with young children and adults, primarily using psychoanalytic psychotherapy or the attachment theory-based child-parent psychotherapy. I utilize psychotherapy, instead of psychopharmacological treatments (medications), to address the underlying causes of distressing emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns. I believe there are significant limitations to psychiatric medications, especially when used without consistent psychotherapy. Furthermore, people are complex, dynamic, and emotionally rich, and they deserve treatment that addresses the depth of their whole selves.

I received my medical degree from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. My post-graduate training in adult psychiatry was delivered through the Hennepin-Regions Psychiatry Training Program in tandem with psychotherapy training through Hamm Memorial Psychiatric Clinic. Subsequently, I received child and adolescent psychiatry training through Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and specialized training in infant mental health and child-parent psychotherapy through the Harris Center for Infant Mental Health. Additionally, I completed three years of psychoanalytic psychotherapy training through the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. I engage also in regular professional supervision and peer consultation. My psychotherapy practice is rooted in psychoanalytic theory, including attachment and early childhood development, and I have special interests in client-centered psychotherapy developed by Carl Rogers and primary prevention in mental health care.

What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a general term for a wide array of therapeutic approaches that address human suffering in one form or another. I utilize a psychodynamic and client-centered approach with incorporation of experiential and mindfulness-based interventions. My focus in therapy is on the relationship between you (the patient) and me (the therapist). Together we work to better understand your individual needs and desires; increase insight into emotion and thought patterns that serve as barriers to positive change; and increase acceptance of yourself. My aim is to help my patients find decreased distress and increased contentment through in-depth exploration of emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships within a safe, healing space.

Rates and Insurance

I am currently an in-network provider with Aetna, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, Cigna, HealthPartners, Medica, Medicare, PreferredOne, UCare, and United Healthcare/United Behavioral Health. I am also able to accept insurance delivered through the Minnesota Health Care Programs.

I can often, though not always, submit a claim to your insurance company if I am considered an out-of-network provider for your insurance plan, but you are ultimately responsible for payment of services and collecting reimbursement from your insurance company. Out-of-network benefits vary from plan to plan.

I also accept self-pay, which can offer an additional privacy and freedom with regard to your care. Please call for information about my self-pay rates, and we can discuss any concerns you have about being able to afford psychotherapy.
